SPRING DEMONSTRATION

Originally a caterer and personal chef, Sue later became Culinary Coordinator for D&W Food Centers where she designed and operated the first recreational cooking school in Western Michigan, as well as running in-store demo programs for seven locations.
​
Over the years, Sue continued her passion for good food by producing and hosting the television show 
Get Fresh With Sue Chef, a farm-to-table cooking show that aired on every public television station in Michigan. A successful bottled spice line and cookbook soon followed.

Sue is married to another chef, of course. Together they own and operate four restaurants: Ottawa Beach Inn in Holland, The Mermaid Bar and Grill and Baldy’s Smoked Meats in Saugatuck, and Matchbox Diner and Drinks in Grand Rapids.

Spring 2021 (April – May)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the time being, all cooking classes are demonstration‑style and are limited to 18 people only. Sit back and watch Sue Chef, and other local celebrity guest chefs, prepare and educate while you sip on a glass of perfectly paired wine, beer or cocktail. Come hungry, because there will be hearty samples of each dish! Leave with a full belly and a packet of recipes you can try at home.

Join our in-house Sommelier and Director of Spirits, Chef Mindy Trafman, as she is joined by Catherine Halinski from Evergreen Creamery in Fennville, MI. First, Chef Mindy will teach you how to artfully arrange a charcuterie board with a variety of cured meat, plus cheese, fruit, nuts, and more. Next, Catherine will talk about the wonderful cheeses made at Evergreen Creamery and how they pair with charcuterie. Finally, Mindy will pair wines to go with the charcuterie boards and talk about how to create the perfect wine pairing. ​This class includes small bites and a lot of tastings!

Join Chef Eric Chaitin at Baldy’s Smoked Meats (349 Water St. in Saugatuck) on the water in downtown Saugatuck for an in depth discussion on brines, rubs, mops, and the technique of smoking meats to a tender, juicy perfection. Baldy’s is known for authentic, pit-style, smoked BBQ. Enjoy a sampling of their beef brisket, chicken, ribs, and sausage, along with some of their famous sides like cheesy potatoes and elote corn; plus a sampler flight of delicious, cold craft beers. You will also be given recipes and how-to instructions on creating your own smoked meats at home using a simple grill.

This unique class takes place at Baldy's Smoked Meats, located at 349 Water St. in Saugatuck, — not at Isabel's Market + Eatery.

This is a unique opportunity to try many of the amazing products carried at Isabel’s Market + Eatery! Have you wandered our store and wondered what some of those interesting jars, meats, and packages are for, and what they taste like? Well now is your chance! Lake Michigan harbors some of the freshest, wild-caught fish such as salmon, rainbow trout and lake trout. First, join us at West Michigan Charter Fishing (641 Water Street, Slip #1, Saugatuck, MI) for an early-morning charter fishing expedition. Captain Eric Schippa will guide the group into catching enough fish for a lunchtime feast. Later come back to Isabel’s Market + Eatery (310 Blue Star Highway, Douglas, MI) to learn from seafood expert Sue Chef on how to filet, skin, and cook these delectable beauties! This class promises to be a half-day of fun and feasting, so come prepared. Sue Chef will send a list, ahead of time, of what to bring and appropriate attire. Class size is limited to 6 participants, so please sign up early!​
This unique class takes place at two consecutive locations:
  1. Start out at West Michigan Charter Fishing (641 Water Street, Slip #1, Saugatuck, MI) at 6 am for an early-morning charter fishing expedition.
  2. After the fishing expedition, come back to Isabel’s Market + Eatery (310 Blue Star Highway, Douglas, MI) to learn from seafood expert Sue Chef on how to filet, skin, and cook these delectable beauties!

You may cancel your registration up to two weeks prior to class for a full refund. No refunds can be issued after the two-week window, however you may transfer your ticket to another party at any time prior to class. The Culinary School at Isabel's and Sue Chef may cancel class at any time, for reasons unknown (such as weather, illness, mechanical issues, etc.) You will be personally notified via text or email and a full refund will be issued or class will be rescheduled at an agreed upon date.
